A quick guide to knowing when professional support is worth booking.
Not every ache needs a specialist — but some do, and knowing the difference can save weeks of unnecessary discomfort. Here's a general guide to help you decide (though when in doubt, a quick consultation is always the safer choice).
Usually fine to monitor for a few days: mild, general soreness after new or unusually intense activity that improves day by day with rest.
Worth booking an assessment: pain that doesn't meaningfully improve after a week, pain that changes how you walk or move, swelling that doesn't settle, or any injury that affects the same way you're compensating on the other side of your body.
Don't wait on these: sudden loss of movement or strength, pain following a fall or direct impact, or persistent pain that's getting worse rather than better.
The bigger picture. Physiotherapists don't just treat injuries after the fact — an assessment can also catch small movement or posture issues before they turn into bigger problems.
If you're ever unsure, it's almost always better to have it checked than to wait and hope. A short assessment can either put your mind at ease or catch something early, before it becomes a longer recovery.
